Every year from about mid-August to mid-September a jewel of the Cape Floral Kingdom’s crown shines in a magnificent prismatic display of colours as a plethora of wild flower petals open to the warm West Coast sun. It will be approaching spring and the rainfall season past has saturated the ground to bring new life to 1200 species of wild flower seeds hidden beneath the Sandveld. There will be a hive of Bird life activity as this ecosystem welcomes the new season.
Situated on the banks of the Berg River only 150kms from Cape Town, Kersefontein is an 18th Century Cape Dutch farm that is still to this day owned and farmed by the Melck Family. Many figureheads and members of high society have visited the farm to witness the transformation of a semi-arid landscape into an explosive cacophony of colour and sound – notably Graça Machel and the late Nelson Mandela.
